Czech Out That Wolf

Saint Paul spoke as follows before he journeyed to Rome to undergo his trial and execution there:

Take heed to yourselves, and to the whole flock, wherein the Holy Ghost hath placed you bishops, to rule the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. I know that, after my departure, ravening wolves will enter in among you, not sparing the flock. And of your own selves shall arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them  (Acts 20: 28-30)

The wolves in shepherds' clothing that have such an unspeakable hatred for the perennial teaching of the Catholic Church and for Immemorial Mass of Tradition in which that teaching is best expressed and protected are located throughout the world. The hatred for anything and everything to do with the patrimony of the Catholic Church prior to 1958 reaches the stage of evangelical fervor in many instances around the world. Doctrinal and liturgical revolutionaries will do or say anything to stamp out all resistance to their diabolically-inspired schemes in order to flush the Catholic past down the Orwellian memory hole. The very same people who countenance outright rebellion against articles contained in the Deposit of Faith and who participate in scandalous "liturgies" purporting to be an offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass are quick to quash anything that smacks of actual Catholicism in a heartbeat.

One of the universal aspects of conciliarism is episcopal fascism. This is true in the United States of America. It is true almost everywhere throughout the world. The Czech Republic, which was controlled by self-identified Communists from 1948-1990, features bishops who are just as fascistic in their persecution of traditional Catholics as the Stalinists who controlled the bureaucratic apparatus in the former Czechoslovakia were in their treatment of "political reactionaries." Indeed, the hierarchy appointed in Central and Eastern European countries during the pontificate of Pope Paul VI was littered in more than a few instances with men who were at least somewhat sympathetic to Communism, if not outright Communists themselves, men who were thoroughly acceptable to the Bolsheviks in control of the apparatus of the state. Others were appointed who simply were quiet about the evils of Bolsehevism, accepting Pope Paul VI's desire to "normalize" relations with the Soviet bloc countries.

In other words, Pope Paul VI, in the name of his Ostpolitik policy, did voluntarily in the Soviet bloc what the Maoists were doing by the brute power of the State with the Chinese Patriotic Association in Red China: appointing men as bishops who were acceptable to Communist Party leaders. It does not take a particularly vast amount of intelligence to realize that bishops recommend like-minded men to be elevated to the episcopate. Thus it is that an entire generation of ecclesiastical revolutionaries have included more than its fair share of bishops who have also been possessed of great sympathies for the views of Marxism-Leninism. (Although outside of the purview of this article, Pope Paul VI appointed a number of Communist-leaning prelates in the United States and throughout Latin America, part of his support of "liberation theology," to which he gave impetus at the infamous Medellin Conference in Colombia in August of 1968).

Indeed, an interview with Dr. Alice von Hildebrand in the Summer, 2001, issue of The Latin Mass: A Journal of Catholic Culture covered Pope Paul VI's propensity to appease Communist tyrants behind the Iron Curtain:

TLM: You realize, of course, Doctor, that as soon as you mention this idea of infiltration, there will be those who roll their eyes in exasperation and remark, "Not another conspiracy theory!"

AVH: I can only tell you what I know. It is a matter of public record, for instance, that Bella Dodd, the ex-Communist who reconverted to the Church, openly spoke of the Communist Party's deliberate infiltration of agents into the seminaries. She told my husband and me that when she was an active party member, she had dealt with no fewer than four cardinals within the Vatican "who were working for us."

Many a time I have heard Americans say that Europeans "smell conspiracy wherever they go." But from the beginning, the Evil One has "conspired" against the Church -- and has always aimed in particular at destroying the mass and sapping belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. That some people are empted to blow this undeniable fact out of proportion is no reason for denying its reality. On the other hand, I, European born, am tempted to say that many Americans are naive; living in a country that has been blessed by peace, and knowing little about history, they are more likely than Europeans (whose history is a tumultuous one) to fall prey to illusion. Rousseau has had an enormous influence in the United States. When Christ said to His apostles at the Last Supper that "one of you will betray me," the apostles were stunned. Judas had played his hand so artfully that no one suspected him, for a cunning conspirator knows how to cover his tracks with a show of orthodoxy.

TLM: Do the books by the Italian priest you mentioned before the interview contain documentation that would provide evidence of this infiltration?

AVH: The two books I mentioned were published in 1998 and 2000 by an Italian priest, Don Luigi Villa of the diocese of Brescia, who at the request of Padre Pio has devoted many years of his life to the investigation of the possible infiltration of both Freemasons and Communists into the Church. My husband and I met Don Villa in the sixties. He claims that he does not make any statement that he cannot substantiate. When Paulo Sesto Beato? (1998) was published the book was sent to every single Italian bishop. None of them acknowledged receipt; none challenged any of Don Villa's claims.

In this book, he relates something that no ecclesiastical authority has refuted or asked to be retracted -- even though he names particular personalities in regard to the incident. It pertains to the rift between Pope Pius XII and then Bishop Montini (the future Paul VI) who was his Undersecretary of State. Pius XII, conscious of the threat of Communism, which in the aftermath of World War II was dominating nearly half of Europe, had prohibited the Vatican staff from dealing with Moscow. To his dismay, he was informed one day through the Bishop of Upsala (Sweden) that his strict order had been contravened. The Pope resisted giving credence to this rumor until he was given incontrovertible evidence that Montini had been corresponding with various Soviet agencies. Meanwhile, Pope Pius XII (as had Pius XI) had been sending priests clandestinely into Russia to give comfort to Catholics behind the Iron Curtain. Every one of them had been systematically arrested, tortured, and either executed or sent to the gulag. Eventually a Vatican mole was discovered: Alighiero Tondi, S.J., who was a close advisor to Montini. Tondi was an agent working for Stalin whose mission was to keep Moscow informed about initiatives such as the sending of priests into the Soviet Union.

Add to this Pope Paul's treatment of Cardinal Mindszenty. Against his will, Mindszenty was ordered by the Vatican to leave Budapest. As most everyone knows, he had escaped the Communists and sought refuge in the American embassy compound. The Pope had given him his solemn promise that he would remain primate of Hungary as long as he lived. When the Cardinal (who had been tortured by the Communists) arrived in Rome, Paul VI embraced him warmly, but then sent him to exile in Vienna. Shortly afterwards, this holy prelate was informed that he had been demoted, and had been replaced by someone more acceptable to the Hungarian Communist government. More puzzling, and tragically sad, is the fact that when Mindszenty died, no Church representative was present at his burial.

Another of Don Villa's illustrations of infiltration is one related to him by Cardinal Gagnon. Paul VI had asked Gagnon to head an investigation concerning the infiltration of the Church by powerful enemies. Cardinal Gagnon (at that time Archbishop) accepted this unpleasant task, and compiled a long dossier, rich in worrisome facts. When the work was completed, he requested an audience with Pope Paul in order to deliver personally the manuscript to the Pontiff. This request for a meeting was denied. The Pope sent word that the document should be placed in the offices of the Congregation for the Clergy, specifically in a safe with a double lock. This was done, by the very next day the safe deposit box was broken and the manuscript mysteriously disappeared. The usual policy of the Vatican is to make sure the news of such incidents never sees the light of day. Nevertheless, this theft was reported even in L'Osservatore Romano (perhaps under pressure because it had been reported in the secular press). Cardinal Gagnon, of course, had a copy, and once again asked the Pope for a private audience. Once again his request was denied. He then decided to leave Rome and return to his homeland in Canada. Later, he was called back to Rome by Pope John Paul II and made a cardinal.

TLM: Why did Don Villa write these works singling out Paul VI for criticism?

AVH: Don Villa reluctantly decided to publish the books to which I have alluded. But when several bishops pushed for beatification of Paul VI, this priest perceived it as a clarion call to print the information he had gathered through the years. In so doing, he was following the guidelines of a Roman Congregation, informing the faithful that it was their duty as members of the Church to relay to the Congregation any information that might militate against the candidate's qualifications for beatification.

This background is a necessary prelude to understanding the decree issued on March 31, 2006, by Miloslav Cardinal Vlk (the name means "wolf" in the English language), the Archbishop of Prague, and the Primate of the Czech Republic, to prohibit Catholics in the Czech Republic from having anything to do with a journal, Te Deum, published by Michal Semin and the Institute of Saint Joseph. The reason for this decree? Mr. Semin and his board of advisers are "schismatics" who adhere to the "schismatic" Society of Saint Pius X and who reject the Second Vatican Council and the validity of the conciliar popes. In the true spirit of Bolshevik disinformation, Cardinal Vlk's decree is riddled with calumny and distortions of fact.

Here is Cardinal Vlk's decree:

From even a cursory overview, it is clear (and the name of its editors and authors directly prove the point) that it is a publication of a group following the teachings of the former archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, expelled from the Church by Pope Paul VI or his current successor, the equally schismatic bishop Bernard Fellay. As is also clear not only from the magazine itself, but even more so from the internet pages that make reference to it, this publication has attracted the engagement of priests who belong to the Community of St. Pius X., also expelled from the community of the church (Tomáš Stritzko and Jaromír Kučírek). This brotherhood (FSSPX) was in 1975, at the impulse of Pope Paul VI, deprived of legal subjectivity and lost its right to exist.

A similar association boasting a seemingly harmless name in the Czech Republic is the St. Joseph Institute. The common feature of these people is their refusal to recognize the Second Vatican Council, the liturgical reforms it introduced, and even the popes who have followed after Pius XII. In their view, these popes are schismatics, indeed antichrists, and consequently they grievously assault the unity of the Catholic faith. This matter has been discussed at the last meeting of Cardinals with the Holy Father on March 23. In regards to it, I rely on the opinions of the other cardinals, and have personally discussed this association (FSSPX) with Cardinal Dario Castrillón Hoyos, the prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, who has warned against this schismatic group.

As the Archbishop of Prague, I strongly emphasize that it is absolutely unthinkable that this magazine appear anywhere in the parishes and churches of the Prague archdiocese. I forbid all faithful from purchasing and distributing this bi-monthly and supporting the previously mentioned schismatics in any way". Cardinal Miloslav Vlk

So much disinformation, so little time. However, let me begin by pointing out the role of Dario Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos, the President of Pontifical Ecclesia Dei.

Cardinal Vlk writes that he has personally discussed the situation of the Society of Saint Pius X, which he terms as "schismatic," with Cardinal Hoyos, who said in four different interviews at the end of 2005 that the Society of Saint Pius X is not in schism and that it is not out of the Church. This is what Cardinal Hoyos said in his 30 Days interview late last year when asked about whether the Society of Saint Pius X is in schism:

"Unfortunately that is proof that within the Church, even at high levels, there is not always full knowledge of the Fraternity. The Fraternity has always recognized in John Paul II, and now in Benedict XVI, the legitimate successor of Saint Peter. That is not a problem. That then there are traditionalist groups that don’t recognize the last popes, the so-called 'empty throne' people, is another question that doesn’t concern the Saint Pius X Fraternity."

Furthermore, Cardinal Vlk, Cardinal Hoyos gave an interview that aired on an Italian television channel, Canal 5, on November 23, 2005. While noting the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre's consecration of bishops in 1988 without a papal mandate was indicative of a schismatic attitude, Cardinal Hoyos undercut your position entirely, Cardinal Vlk, by reiterating the point that he had made in the 30 Days interview:

"They [the Society of Saint Pius X] are within the confines of the Church. The problem is just that there is a lack of full, a more perfect--and as it was said during the meeting with Msgr. Fellay--a more full communion, because communion exists."

Is Cardinal Hoyos speaking with a forked tongue, trying to bait the Society of Saint Pius X into an agreement with the Holy See by speaking kindly about them in some venues while reaffirming prelates like Cardinal Vlk, who believe that the Society is indeed "schismatic" and that any group of lay people associated with the Society represents a danger to the Faith?

Is Cardinal Vlk presenting accurately Cardinal Hoyos's remarks to him on the subject of the Society of Saint Pius X or Te Deum or the Institute of Saint Joseph?

How can Cardinal Hoyos speak publicly of His Excellency, the Most Reverend Bernard Fellay, the Superior General of the Society of Saint Pius X, as his "brother bishop" while Cardinal Vlk is permitted to calumniate Bishop Fellay as "schismatic?"

How can Cardinal Vlk imply that the members of the Society of Saint Pius X do not accept the validity of the conciliar and postconciliar popes when Cardinal Hoyos told 30 Days that the Society has always recognized their validity?

These are questions deserving of answers.

Cardinal Vlk is thus presenting misinformation, whether deliberately or not is impossible to say, to the Catholics of the Czech Republic to "warn" them about a magazine and an institute that exist to simply teach the truths of the Catholic Faith as they have been taught perennially

Most assuredly, there are Catholics who have come to the conclusion--or who hold that it is a legitimate theological opinion to believe--that the conciliar and postconciliar popes have defected from the Faith and have thus deprived themselves of holding the offices that appeared to be conferred upon them, basing this view in part upon the words contained in Pope Paul IV's Cum Ex Apostolatus Officio, February 15, 1559.

Not one of the members of the Institute of Saint Joseph or the board of Te Deum have come to the conclusion, either publicly or privately, that the conciliar or postconciliar popes have deviated from the Faith so as to disqualify themselves from holding the Throne of Saint Peter. The first issue of Te Deum features a photograph of Pope Benedict XVI holding Our Lord's Real Presence in a monstrance! How can it be said that Mr. Semin or the other contributors of Te Deum do not accept the legitimacy of the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI? Cardinal Vlk has no case in this regard against these Catholics. He is, indeed, calumniating them. Greatly. He is committing a sin against Charity and Justice.

Who are the members of Advisory Board of the Institute of Saint Joseph? Among the members known to me personally are: Michael Matt, publisher-editor of The Remnant, who goes to the indult Mass in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis and who is not a sedevacantist; Christopher Ferrara, who assists at Holy Mass offered by the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter at Our Lady of Fatima Chapel in Pequannock, New Jersey, and who wrote articles critical of sedevacantism in the The Remnant and Catholic Family News; Dr. David Allen White, a supporter of the Society of Saint Pius X who occasionally assists at Mass offered by Father Ronald Ringrose, who is not a sedevacantist, at Saint Athanasius Church in Vienna, Virginia; Dr. Alice von Hildebrand, the widow of the late Dr. Dietrich von Hildebrand, who goes to the Novus Ordo Missae in New Rochelle, New York, in addition to assisting at the indult offerings of the Immemorial Mass of Tradition; Dr. John Rao, the Director of the Dietrich von Hildebrand Institute in the City of New York, who goes to the indult Mass at Saint Agnes Church on East 43rd Street in Manhattan each Sunday; Mrs. Ann Malone, who used to help coordinate the indult Mass in Phoenix, Arizona and now assists at Holy Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, which is administered by priests of the Society of Saint Pius X; Mr. James Vogel, who is an associate editor of The Angelus, which is produced by the Society of Saint Pius X, whose priests pray for Pope Benedict XVI and the local diocesan ordinary in every Mass; Mr. John Blewett, the managing editor of The Latin Mass: A Journal of Catholic Culture, who goes to Holy Mass in a variety of different venues, indult and independent alike; Mr. Francis Crotty, a founder of the Kolbe Academy in Napa, California, who goes to the Novus Ordo Missae and to indult offerings of the Mass of Tradition; Dr. Peter Chojnowski, who assists at Holy Mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Post Falls, Idaho, which is administered by the Society of Saint Pius X; Mr. John Vennari, the editor of Catholic Family News, a publication that published articles critical of sedevacantism in 2005; and Mr. John Sharpe, who assists at Holy Mass at Saint Athanasius Church in Vienna, Virginia. Miloslav Cardinal Vlk has calumniated each of these individuals, attributing to each one a position that not one of them holds, either privately or publicly. Not one is in schism from the Catholic Church. Cardinal Vlk owes each of these people an apology. His Eminence owes an apology to Te Deum magazine and to the Institute of Saint Joseph collectively. His Eminence owes an apology to Bishop Bernard Fellay.

Miloslav Cardinal Vlk is just another wolf in shepherds' clothing, seeking to discredit Catholics who dissent from not one whit of anything contained in the Deposit of Faith and who worship God as He has been worshiped since Our Lord Himself taught the Immemorial Mass of Tradition to the Apostles before He Ascended to the Father's right hand in glory forty days after His Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Cardinal Vlk is demonstrating himself to have more in common with the spirit of Gustav Husak, the leader of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia from 1969 to 1987 than with, say, a canonized pontiff, Pope Saint Pius X, who would find no problem at all with Mr. Michael Semin, Te Deum, the Institute of Saint Joseph or any of the latter's board members. Miloslav Cardinal Vlk is using disinformation to seek to discredit believing Catholics who want to help others to know the authentic patrimony of the Church before it was corrupted by the ethos of conciliarism, which is founded in large part on silence about the evils of the very Communism that helped to infiltrate the Church in her human elements in the years following the end of World War II and the rise of the Cold War.

One wonders if Cardinal Vlk would say anything at all if the notorious dissenter, Father Richard McBrien, a priest of the Archdiocese of Hartford, Connecticut, who teaches at the University of Notre Dame and who remains in perfectly good standing with his ordinary, the Most Reverend Henry Mansell, were invited to speak in a Catholic venue in the Czech Republic. One wonders if Cardinal Vlk would say anything if Father Hans Kung, who seeks to institute a one world religion and has been declare unfit to serve as a professor of Catholic theology, were invited to speak in a Catholic venue in the Czech Republic. One wonders if Cardinal Vlk would say anything if a pro-abortion Catholic politician from the United States of America were invited to speak in a Catholic venue in the Czech Republic. One wonders if the only people who might be the subject of the exercise of Cardinal Vlk's episcopal powers are Catholics who believe everything that Catholics have believed prior to 1958 and who worship as Roman Rite Catholics had worshiped for nearly two millennia prior to the 1960s, the very form of worship that produced most of the canonized saints of the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church. Why the hatred for Faith of our fathers? Why the hatred for the Mass of all ages, Cardinal Vlk? Why the hatred?

Yes, one must "czech out that wolf" in Prague named Miloslav Cardinal Vlk, a man who thinks nothing of calumniating believing Catholics who have given their very lives--and have made many sacrifices--in defense of the fullness of the Catholic Faith. Mr. Semin has assembled a wide variety of people to serve on his advisory board, some of whom disagree with each other greatly about how to address the problems Holy Mother Church faces in her human elements. That Mr. Semin could assemble such a variety of talented, dedicated Catholics is a testimony to the esteem in which his own self-sacrificing work is held. The fact that he can be persecuted so viciously and calumniated so wantonly by a Prince of the Catholic Church demonstrates the depths to which we have fallen in the postconciliar era. While one can disagree with various positions and strategies, no sincere Catholic can question the good will and the genuine Catholicity of any of the members of Mr. Semin's advisory board. Only, it appears, a wolf in shepherd's clothing, intent on promoting a doctrinal and liturgical revolution that has devastated the Church in her human elements and hurt countless numbers of the souls for whom Our Lord shed every single drop of His Most Precious Blood, is capable of doing so, proving once again the grip that Diabolical Disorientation has on the members of hierarchy today.

Mr. Semin is aware, I am sure, that there is much merit for him and for his board for the calumny they are suffering at the hands of Cardinal Vlk, especially if this injustice is offered freely to Our Lady's Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart as her consecrated slaves. We must intensify our own prayers for the good of Holy Mother Church in these troubling times, never ceasing to pray for Pope Benedict XVI and for his cardinals and bishops and priests. No prayer is ever wasted. Not one. Those of us who are totally consecrated to Our Lady's Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart give her all of the merits that we able to accrue by means of the graces won for us by her Divine Son on the the wood of the Holy Cross. We pray for a day when some pope will obey Our Lady's Fatima Message and make the nightmare foreseen by Pope Leo XIII (of Satan having his way with the Church for about a hundred years; the full text of the Saint Michael the Archangel Prayer, composed by Pope Leo in 1888, four years after the vision he had during Holy Mass, is appended after the invocations to the saints below) disappear with the restoration of Tradition in the Church and Christendom in the world.

Never lose heart, ladies and gentlemen. Never lose heart. Not once. Ever. Get to the Mass of the ages every day, making whatever sacrifices you need to do so. Keep on your knees before the Blessed Sacrament. Get to Confession regularly. Always keep close to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Always keep praying Our Lady's Most Holy Rosary. Have your homes enthroned to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Wear the Brown Scapular. Wear the Miraculous Medal.

Remember this: the devil may win a few battles in our own lives and in the larger life of the Church in her human elements. The final victory belongs to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and thus to the Prince of Peace Himself, Christ the King. Never lose heart. Not once. Ever.

The Longer Version of the Saint Michael the Archangel Prayer, composed by Pope Leo XIII, 1888

O glorious Archangel Saint Michael, Prince of the heavenly host, be our defense in the terrible warfare which we carry on against principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, spirits of evil.  Come to the aid of man, whom God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of the devil.  Fight this day the battle of our Lord, together with  the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in heaven.  That cruel, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels.  Behold this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage.  Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order to blot out the Name of God and of His Christ, to seize upon, slay, and cast into eternal perdition, souls destined for the crown of eternal glory.  That wicked dragon pours out. as a most impure flood, the venom of his malice on men of depraved mind and corrupt heart, the spirit of lying, of impiety, of blasphemy, and the pestilent breath of impurity, and of every vice and iniquity.  These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness the Church, the spouse of the Immaculate Lamb, and have laid impious hands on Her most sacred possessions. In the Holy Place itself, where has been set up the See of the most holy Peter and the Chair of Truth for the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck the sheep may be scattered.  Arise then, O invincible Prince, bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God, and give them the victory.  They venerate thee as their protector and patron; in thee holy Church glories as her defense against the malicious powers of hell; to thee has God entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude.  Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet, so far conquered that he may no longer be able to hold men in captivity and harm the Church.  Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High, so that they may quickly conciliate the mercies of the Lord; and beating down the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, do thou again make him captive in the abyss, that he may no longer seduce the nations.  Amen.

Verse: Let us pray.  O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we call upon Thy holy Name, and as suppliants, we implore Thy clemency, that by the intercession of Mary, ever Virgin, immaculate and our Mother, and of the glorious Archangel Saint Michael, Thou wouldst deign to help us against Satan and all other unclean spirits, who wander about the world for the injury of the human race and the ruin of our souls.
